FARM ANIMALS

Dairy cows

Dairy cows produce milk. Cheese, sour cream, yogurt, butter and ice cream are some products made from cows' milk.

Beef cattle

Beef cattle are raised for meat -- for burgers, roasts, steaks, and other meat products. Other things made from cattle are medicine, piano keys and leather.

Chickens

On an egg farm chickens are raised to lay eggs.
On a poultry farm they are raised for their meat.

Turkeys

Turkeys are raised year round in specially built barns
where the temperature and light is controlled.

Hogs

Hogs is another name for swine. You might call them pigs. An average hog produces seven kgs. of bacon. We also get ham, porkchops, roast, sausages and ribs from hogs. The skin is used for leather products.

Horses

Horses are used for trail-riding, rodeos and horse racing.
Some pull wagons and other equipment. Some are raised for meat.

Sheep

Sheep are raised for their meat and for their wool. There are three kinds of sheep - longwool, shortwool and hill breeds. Longwool breeds are raised mainly for their wool. Shortwool breeds are raised for meat and hill breeds produce both meat and wool.

Exotic Animals

Exotic animals like ostriches and llamas are bred by some farmers. These animals have tasty high-protein meat. Elk, deer and bison are also raised on farms or ranches.

Goats

Goats are raised on farms mainly for their milk and for making cheese products.

The Canadian Western Agribition is one of the largest livestock shows in Canada. It is held each November in Regina.
Visitors come from many countries. Some of the livestock exhibited include cattle, horses, sheep, elk, goats, alpacas, llama and bison.
