ANNUALS

Annuals are plants that produce flowers and seeds during the growing season.

Annuals do not survive the winter.

But in the spring, new plants grow from the seeds that the plants produced in the fall.

PERENNIALS

Perennials are plants that survive the winter.

The part of the plant that grows above the ground dies, but the roots are protected by layers of snow.

Then in the spring, the plants will start to grow again.

TREES

There aredeciduous  trees and coniferous  trees. How do the trees survive the winter?

tree

Deciduous  trees lose their leaves each fall.

  • In the fall, heat, light, water and minerals become less available.
  • The trees get rid of the leaves by stopping the flow of food to the leaves.
  • The leaves change color and then fall off.

Some trees remain green all year round.

fir

Coniferous  trees have needle-like leaves and produce cones.

  • These trees do not lose all the needles in the fall.
  • The needles drop off a little at a time during the year.
  • More needles fall off in late summer and in the fall.
  • The trees do not grow in the winter.
